Karim Rashid's showroom in New York says more about the designer than any biography. Transparent roof, lots of light, designer furniture of the most incredible shapes and colors. Fifteen assistants sit in the back of the room, performing complex calculations and verifying mysterious drawings. Karim himself lives on the floor above with his wife-chemist Ivana, who looks like a supermodel, and his little daughter Kiva. Several years ago, the designer gave his word to himself and the world that he would never wear black, so he comes to us in a white and pink ensemble, sits down on one of his masterpieces, looks at the white dial of a pink watch and starts answering questions with pleasure.

Only forward
“Every day I try to do something new: I definitely learn new words, make sketches, listen to contemporary music,” says Karim Rashid. - To move forward, you need to constantly develop. I tirelessly try myself in different fields - in the design of furniture, tableware, accessories, packaging, in the world of interiors and architecture. We can say that my specialization is the entire human environment in the broadest sense of this concept. Look at the Nooch restaurant in New York, at the Bosco 3.14 concept boutique in Moscow (in the Vesna shopping center), made according to my designs. They are all different, but at the same time, a certain style is read in each. Carelessness of pure and bright colors, smooth glossy surfaces, simple and soft outlines … I love hi-tech, I am not afraid of artificial materials and I never feel nostalgia for the past."

Communicating vessels
“The creation of the perfume bottle was another step forward for me. I have always been sure that emotions are transmitted not only directly through the aroma, but also through the vessel in which the composition is enclosed. Over ten years ago I designed the Kenzo Amour. And here is a new work - a bottle for Jeu d'Amour. Kenzo Parfums Creative Director Patrick Gage told me how he sees this story. This time it was about temptation and seduction. No anguish and vulgarity, only a game of chance, impetuous. By that time, there was no “juice” itself. Just a detailed brief on the future perfume, based on which I made thousands of drawings. With a little design trick, I was able to convey the dynamics of the fragrance. Previously, the bottle cap was more elongated and lived a life of its own. Now it has become shorter, and with it the gesture has changed, which turns the use of perfume into an expressive impulse. Now the bottle evokes certain expectations in the soul. And in the case of Jeu d'Amour, everything coincides perfectly - the composition fully reflects what is contained in the tangible shell."

Let there be color
“If you knew how many projects I lost because I was afraid of color. Fortunately, now I understand how many emotional doors open up bright colors and bold combinations. Few people are interested in neutrality today because it does not reflect individuality. A person who once lived in my interior will never be able to return to a traditional setting. He will understand that such simple and pragmatic things as a window with a correctly falling light, or a special ceiling height, or multifunctional furniture are a vital necessity, and all kinds of colors, different smells and sounds fill every day with joy."
