From April 22 to July 24, the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art (www.erarta.com/ru/museum) in St. Petersburg will host a large-scale retrospective exhibition of the works of the legendary photographer Steve Schapiro. Shapiro's career began in 1961 during the "golden age of photojournalism." A talented documentary filmmaker, he captured the rise and fall of the hippie movement and witnessed many historical events. His reports have been published in publications such as Life, Time, Rolling Stone, People, Vanity Fair. Each piece is a precise composition and perfect balance of black and white. Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, Rene Magritte, Barbara Streisand, David Bowie, Tina Turner are looking at Shapiro's photographs.
More than 100 photographs will be shown at the exhibition in Erarta. The exposition is divided into blocks dedicated to icons of the art and music scene and genre street photography. Besides, a special block dedicated to the special project “The Godfather. Family Album”, compiled from color photographs of Steve Shapiro, taken during the filming of the cult trilogy by Francis Ford Coppola. Such an event is a good reason to visit the city on the Neva for at least a couple of days.
Where to stay
If you don’t have an apartment in the city on the Neva, or you don’t know a cozy studio in the center of St. Petersburg, it makes sense to stay in one of the rooms of the Erarta Museum's partner, the Solo Sokos Hotel Vasilievsky (www.sokoshotels.fi/ru/sankt-peterburg/sokos -hotel-vasilievsky), especially since it offers special conditions for visiting the exhibition as part of the "Art Travel" program. All hotel guests have the opportunity to visit the largest private museum of contemporary art in Russia free of charge, with a permanent collection of 2,300 works by more than 250 artists.
The hotel itself, which belongs to the largest hotel chain in Finland, is located in the heart of the cultural life of the northern capital - on Vasilievsky Island next to the Academy of Arts. So the emergence of a special “art travel” program here is no coincidence and is very convenient for those who do not forget about the cultural program during their travels.
