Towards midnight, unmarried girls gathered together to conduct the ordinances of fortune-telling. For example, all the rituals associated with fire (a symbol of light, the Sun and the awakening of nature) were especially popular. One of the most harmless was the candle ritual: the girl sat in front of her, looked at the flame for a while, closed her eyes and imagined the life she dreamed of. It was believed that this "meditation" is very effective on such a night. Also, young people used to guess on gingerbread, in which symbolic objects were put in during baking. If a girl gets a treat with a coin, it means that she will be rich, an earring - a meeting with her future husband, a bead - pregnancy.
Other peoples: Indian festival of colors, worship of the goddess of fertility and sacrifice to Kukulcan
On the day of the vernal equinox, the Maya tribes usually went to the foot of the Temple of Kukulkan (the Spaniards called it "El Castillo") - one of the most magnificent buildings of Chichen Itza. The slopes of this pyramid face the four cardinal points and are built in such a way that at the exact moment of the equinox the sun's rays glide over the stones, creating the effect of a snake creeping downward. The Maya believed that this Kukulkana (feathered deity of light) descends from heaven to earth to protect them from adversity. But it was really difficult to cajole this powerful supreme deity - according to legend, it accepted only human sacrifices as gifts, so the Mayan ritual of meeting spring was quite bloody.
The people of India celebrated this holiday more peacefully. Usually they gathered in city squares, sang, danced and showered each other with colored powders made from local spices. The Druids performed pagan rites at the foot of Stonehenge to honor the Saxon fertility goddess Eostre. And the Japanese on the day of the vernal equinox usually remember their deceased relatives - they prepare memorial dinners and place photographs of their ancestors in prominent places in the house.
