Curls today are twisted by everyone: both owners of long hair and those who wear a short bob. Natural and relaxed”curls, slightly broken, slightly careless - what we see around, and what we want to flaunt ourselves. Stylist Denis Averianov, owner of the concept studio Denis Averianov, dedicates his essay to those who cannot master the "twist-twirl" technique and are just considering buying a straightener-iron. So, we tell you how and what you need to beautifully ─ and most importantly, it is safe ─ to curl your hair.
Preparation for styling
First of all, you need to prepare your hair for curling. Wash your hair, and complement the cleansing with shampoo with a mask or conditioner: the hair should be as moisturized as possible! Be sure to dry your hair and apply heat protectant evenly over the entire length. The applied styling must also dry.
Use a light spray to add root volume. It is better to refuse mousse, as it makes the styling heavier: after a couple of hours, the hairstyle begins to fall off, and you will say goodbye to the curls. Remember that the temperature of the styler should not exceed 180 ° (in the cabin, devices can be heated up to 220 °, but professionals work with them there). Prepare a medium to strong polish to set curls. Almost everything is ready - it remains to get acquainted with the main principles of work and choose a device.

the main thing
- Choose the styling diameter depending on the desired curl size: the larger the diameter, the more natural the curls will look.
- Heavy and smooth hair is easier to style with an iron or curling iron. Porous, brittle and dry hair ─ for brushing.
- Hold the curling iron / iron on your hair for no more than 4-6 seconds (on hard ones - up to 10-12 seconds).
- For bouncy, round curls, place the device parallel to the floor, for soft curls, hold the styler perpendicular.
- Regardless of the type of styler, hold the finished curl with your hand from the bottom until it cools down.
- When all the hair is curled, you need to stretch the curls with your fingers to the sides, tilting your head down.
Curling iron
This is the simplest home styler. Allows you to create over 50 options for beautiful curls. The curling iron must have a ceramic coating. The most convenient home use is the classic clip curling iron.
Exposure time: 4-6 seconds for one strand.
Frequency of use: once a month.

Making curls:
- Hollywood. For the classic canon, we wind the hair from the ends to the back of the head with a 5 cm indent from the roots. We hold the styler perpendicular to the floor, as in most cases of styling on a curling iron.
- "In different directions". Fashionable, fresh, relevant. We curl each strand in a chaotic manner: from face, to face, from ends to roots, from roots to ends, without twisting the ends, making an indent of 15 cm from the roots, etc. The result is a casual natural styling in the so-called "beach" style.
- Curls with straight ends. We curl the strands, moving to the back of the head and leaving an indent from the ends of 5-10 cm, depending on the length of the hair.
- "Alternation". We alternate twisted strands with straight strands in a 2 to 1 ratio.
Iron
The iron is perhaps the most difficult device for home use in comparison with other stylers, and in order to switch to "you" with it, you will have to try. The iron, like the curling iron, must have a ceramic coating.
Exposure time: 4-6 seconds for one strand.
Frequency of use: once a month.

Making curls:
- Hollywood. We start styling with the front strand, then move on to curling the back of the head. We clamp the strand with plates, stepping back from the roots and moving from top to bottom. We turn the styler 180 ° away from the face and smoothly move along the entire strand to the very ends. We do the same with the back of the head, but retreat from the roots 10 cm. To avoid creases in the curls, do not hold the iron on the hair and do not change the clamping force …
- Retro style. We retreat from the roots 5-7 cm and clamp the strand with an iron to form a bend. Keep the styler parallel to the floor. We lower the iron a "step" below and do the same. Thus, we pass along the entire length.
- Careless volumetric styling. We hold the styler parallel to the floor and wrap a strand around it, slowly descending from top to bottom. We alternate the direction - from face / to face to achieve randomness.
Brashing
Brushing is one of the most common types of styling at home. Unlike other devices, it adds more root volume. The brashing should have a ceramic coating and nylon or natural bristles (pig bristles, horse hair).
Exposure time: 4-6 seconds for one strand.
Frequency of use: once every 7-10 days.

Making curls:
- Classic volume. Dry your hair 80%, for more volume by dropping your head down when drying. Roll a section of hair around the brush away from your face, lifting it up at the roots. Direct the hair dryer with a stream of hot air at the roots from below in the direction of hair growth. When the strand is hot, cool it with cool air or a net (the back of the hair dryer) to extend the styling hold.
- "Like Victoria's Secret Angels." Take two brushes and start styling from the bottom of the hair. We wind the strand on the comb from the ends to the roots, setting the direction from the face or to the face (optional). We leave the comb at the roots and move on to creating the next curl, after which we carefully release the strand from the first brushing. Thus, we go through the whole head.
Thermo curlers
Hot rollers are by no means a grandmother's method, but a convenient and less traumatic thermal device. Hot rollers allow you to do several things at the same time: while the curls are forming, you can afford to be distracted from styling and go about your current business. The device has evolved a lot, and today you need to choose ceramic electric curlers with velor or Teflon coating. They work from the mains, heating up from the inside in a few minutes.
Exposure time: 12-18 minutes.
Frequency of use: 2-3 times a week.

All Seasons styling. Part your hair into the sides and back. Take a strand and, starting from the ends, wind it around the curlers in the direction from the face. Curlers should be in a position parallel to the floor and neatly positioned on the hair, not "crawling" over each other. If you want to create a messy styling, simply twist the strands in different directions.
